William J. Walczak Health + Education Center
The William J. Walczak Health and Education Center is a unique collaboration between two organizations, Codman Square Health Center and Codman Academy, who serve one of the poorest communities in Boston. Codman Square Health Center is a community-based, outpatient health care and multi-service center providing affordable, high quality primary and preventive care. Codman Academy Charter Public School, the only school in the country to be located in a Health Center, is a small college preparatory high school. The two organizations encourage interaction between the students and health center staff with the goals of exposing students to careers in healthcare and educating students on healthy lifestyles with the hope they will pass that knowledge on to their families and community.
The project consists of an addition and renovation to the existing facility with new exam rooms, treatment rooms, multi-purpose group rooms, offices, utility rooms, a reconfigured diagnostic imaging department, new classrooms, cafeteria with outdoor dining terrace and theater space. Based on the merits of the two organizations, an anonymous foundation provided a challenge grant for the project to achieve LEED Gold Certification. Educational tours of the completed project will focus on sustainable design features such as dedicated parking for carpools, a landscape design that incorporates low maintenance native species, a super-insulated building envelope, a highly reflective roof covering, increased indoor air quality, energy efficient mechanical equipment and lighting, Energy Star qualified appliances and equipment and Greenguard certified furnishings.
