St. John's Church
Dover, NH
+ Overview
The Dover, NH Housing Authority received a HUD grant to convert the former St. John’s church into housing for the elderly. The church had been disbanded for many years and it was used for a variety of purposes. The previous owner had converted the building into a fiberglass boat manufacturing facility. The interior required extensive cleaning and remediation before construction could start. The main sanctuary was on the second level and a third floor was added. In addition, the attic was recaptured to provide a fourth level of housing units. There was nothing historic to preserve on the interior, but the brick masonry walls were repointed, new windows were added, as well as a new roof. The steeple was restored and topped with a custom designed weathervane with a schooner ship design that echoed the city’s history as a port with access to Portsmouth.
